Protecting Critical Infrastructure in a High-Security Nuclear Power Project

Project: Taipingling Nuclear Power Station (Units 1 & 2) Underground Waterproofing, Guangdong, China
Challenge: Providing an absolutely reliable, long-term waterproofing barrier for the critical underground structures of a nuclear power plant located in a coastal region. The solution needed to withstand potential ground movement and resist chemical attack in a demanding environment.
HDPE Solution: The project utilized a specialized HDPE waterproofing membrane in a pre-applied system. The HDPE membrane was laid before the concrete was poured. Its key feature is a pre-applied adhesive layer that bonds permanently with the subsequent concrete pour, creating a solid, integral composite structure that eliminates the risk of water migrating between the membrane and the concrete structure .
Results: This application of HDPE membrane earned a top industry award (the Golden Key Award) and is recognized as a benchmark for critical infrastructure projects. The HDPE membrane system provides a robust, durable barrier, ensuring the integrity and safety of the nuclear facility’s foundation for decades .
